Niese makes it look easy in Mets win over Pirates

PITTSBURGH — Jon Niese studied harder and made better pitches, but maybe the best cure yesterday for his recent slump was facing the Pirates.

You know, the team with the .217 batting average that plays in the scenic but mostly empty ballpark. Niese’s truer tests are still to come, but the lefty at least got the Mets a victory on yet another day they scuffled for runs.

“I just wanted to concentrate on fixing what I needed to fix,” Niese said after the Mets’ 3-1 victory at PNC Park that completed a .500 road trip.

Niese, who allowed one run over 7 2/3 innings yesterday, surrendered eight runs and four homers in a debacle Friday at Toronto that rated as his worst career performance. It prompted pitching coach Dan Warthen to tell Niese he needed to work harder on studying opponents he seldom faces.

Getty Images

BEEN A WHILE: Jon Niese delivers as he beats the Pirates for his first win since April 14.

The Pirates fell into that category. Niese, who hadn’t won since his second start of the season, watched more video than usual and ultimately got the desired result, even as he mostly refrained from throwing his signature curveball. Niese used the pitch barely a half dozen times, relying instead on his cutter and fastball.

“We all feel Jon has great stuff, and sometimes he trusts his stuff more than realizing he has to pitch,” Warthen said. “And today I thought he pitched, as well as using his good stuff.”

Against NL East hitters, Niese has a mental picture of what he’s trying to accomplish, according to Warthen, because of familiarity. Warthen wants Niese to have that same mental picture facing teams outside the division.

BOX SCORE

“Look at the video, see the video, but see the swing,” Warthen said. “Without even having a game report you should have an idea how to pitch a guy.”

The Mets (24-20) finished with two victories in three games against the Pirates and tonight open an 11-game homestand during which they face the Padres, Phillies and Cardinals.

As Terry Collins awaits the emergence of a slumping lineup, he will certainly take the pitching he has received since Niese’s dud in Toronto. Over the last five games of the trip, the Mets surrendered an average of three runs.

“If you pitch, you can scratch some runs out,” Collins said. “But if you’re not pitching and you’re not hitting, that’s a bad combo.”

Niese (3-2, 4.29 ERA) took a shutout into the sixth, when Andrew McCutchen stroked an RBI single to pull the Pirates within 3-1. But Niese got Neil Walker to hit into an inning-ending double play before the Pirates could get closer. Overall, Niese allowed five hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

“I did a lot more preparation this go-around, but I still had to trust my stuff and still had to have confidence in it,” Niese said. “I didn’t want to go away from my strengths. Make them adjust to me instead of me adjust to them.”

David Wright delivered an RBI double against Charlie Morton (2-5) in the fifth, extending the Mets’ lead to 3-0. Wright finished 1-for-4 and saw his average dip to .399 — the first time it has been beneath .400 since May 13.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis’ sacrifice fly in the fifth had given the Mets a 2-0 lead after Mike Baxter’s single put runners on the corners with one out. Baxter started at leadoff in slumping Andres Torres’ place for the second straight day and figures to see more action in the starting lineup during the upcoming homestand. Lucas Duda’s RBI single in the first got the Mets started.

Niese, with help from Bobby Parnell and Frank Francisco, made the three runs seem like plenty.

“The best thing I saw was location,” Collins said. “[Niese] pounded the strike zone, you look and he’s got 85 pitches in the eighth inning and he’s strong instead of being 3-2 on a lot of guys.”

Spurs push Clippers to brink

LOS ANGELES — Nothing was going to rattle the calm, cool and collected Spurs. Not even a 24-point deficit.

Tim Duncan scored 19 points, helping engineer a defining 24-0 run in the third quarter, and San Antonio defeated the Clippers 96-86 yesterday to take a commanding 3-0 lead in their second-round playoff series.

“We didn’t plan on being down that much,” said Duncan, who at 36 is hungry to win the team’s fifth NBA championship and first since 2006-07. “We stuck with it.”

Led by Tony Parker’s 23 points and his defense on an ailing Chris Paul, the Spurs kept running their plays even as Blake Griffin’s early offensive assault buried them in a huge hole. Griffin missed three shots in the first half, when he scored 20 points and carried his team to a 24-point lead despite a left hip injury and a sprained right knee.

“They came out like we expected, very strong. Blake was making crazy shots,” Parker said. “We just took our time. It’s a long game, a very long game. At halftime, we were very calm.”

Griffin had 28 points and 16 rebounds, and reserve Mo Williams added 19 points for the Clippers, who face some daunting NBA history heading into Game 4 today at Staples Center. No team has rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win a series.

“If we don’t play with that sense of urgency, it’s not going to be pretty,” Griffin said.

The Clippers played a must-win Game 7 in the opening round on the road at Memphis and succeeded.

Rookie Kawhi Leonard added 14 points and Manu Ginobili 13 to help the top-seeded Spurs win their 17th in a row and improve to 7-0 in the playoffs.

“We all struggled in the first quarter. We didn’t feel right out there,” said Duncan, who like his teammates, looked to Parker to pick the team up.

“He stuck with it, made some big shots down the stretch and continued to attack,” Duncan said.

GAME 4 MAY BE DELAYED

The Clippers and Spurs will play a Game 4 tonight, but it’s just not clear when. That’s because there is a time crunch at the Staples Center, which also is holding a Game 4 of the Kings-Coyotes NHL Western Conference finals at 3:30 p.m. The Kings are up 3-0 in that series.

The NBA Western Conference semifinals series is scheduled to be played tonight at 10:30 p.m., but could be delayed until tomorrow due to a scheduling conflict with an NHL playoff game between the Kings and Coyotes, also scheduled for today, according to an ESPNLosAngeles.com report.

The Clippers and Spurs game would be moved to tomorrow at 7 p.m. if the hockey game goes multiple overtime periods and delays the start of the NBA game too much, an NBA spokesman told the website.

Ortiz carries Red Sox past Phillies

David Ortiz homered, singled and drove in two runs to lead the Red Sox to a 7-5 win, snapping the Phillies’ six-game winning streak last night in Philadelphia.

Mike Aviles, Will Middlebrooks and Jarrod Saltalamacchia also homered for Boston, which won for the seventh time in nine games. Saltalamacchia went 3-for-4, a triple shy of the cycle.

Jon Lester (3-3) improved to 3-0 in four career starts against the Phillies despite giving up four runs in six innings.

Freddy Galvis homered, and John Mayberry Jr., Hector Luna and Shane Victorino each had three hits for the Phillies.

Orioles 6, Nationals 5

In Washington, Adam Jones and Nick Markakis hit two-run homers and the Orioles matched a season high with their fifth straight win.

Jones had three hits as the AL East leaders improved to 15-5 on the road.

Jason Hammel (5-1) pitched 5 1/3 innings for the win, allowing four runs and six hits. Orioles closer Jim Johnson allowed two-out home run in the ninth to Ryan Zimmerman.

Mets owner now calls Wright superstar

This was playful Fred Wilpon, a side of the Mets principal owner we see actually quite often. To wit, the last time he spoke publicly in a baseball setting, at the team’s spring training complex, Wilpon responded to questions about his financial solvency by whipping out a roll of $5 bills.

Yesterday at City Hall, however, Wilpon came off as less desperate and more serene.

Referring to a reporter’s question whether he wants David Wright for the long term, Wilpon said, “You want motherhood? Of course. I love David Wright. He’s one of the great people, not only in baseball. He’s a great young man.

GOOD TIMES: Fred Wilpon seems far removed from the days of the Madoff scandal as Citi Field is offically announced as the host of the 2013 All-Star Game during a City Hall press conference.

WNBA Preview

he Minnesota Lynx rolled through the regular season a year ago, then kept on cruising through the playoffs to win the club’s first WNBA championship.

The bad news for the rest of the league is they’ve got nearly everyone back and open the new season this weekend as the favorites to win again.

“I do think Minnesota is the team to beat,” Seattle veteran Katie Smith said on a conference call. “They’re the defending champs. They didn’t lose anything, and they still look very good.”

The Lynx lost consecutive games just once while putting up a 27-7 record, and then went 7-1 in the playoffs. With just two new faces, they return with the same starting lineup and most of their key reserves.

Now, Minnesota will be trying to become the first team to win consecutive titles since Los Angeles in 2001-02. Houston won the league’s first four titles from 1997-2000. Detroit (2003, ‘06, ‘08), Seattle (2004, ‘10) and Phoenix (2007, ‘09) have also won multiple titles.

“This is a new season, new challenges that we’re going to have to embrace,” said Minnesota’s reigning rookie of the year, Maya Moore. “One of the advantages we have this year is nine people coming back. ... So we have that experience from last year, that familiarity with each other.”

The season tips off Friday night when Candace Parker and the Los Angeles Sparks visit Smith, Sue Bird and the Storm. There’s four more games on Saturday, and Minnesota opens at home against Phoenix on Sunday.

In the Eastern Conference, Atlanta is coming off its second straight trip to the WNBA finals, where it was swept in three games again. The Dream have steadily improved in the regular season every year since entering the league in 2008, going from four wins that season, to 14 the following year, 15 in 2010 and 20 last season.

Atlanta will look to draw from its experience the last two years to return to the finals once again and get the title this time.

“Everybody sort of has a mindset that they can win a championship each year,” said Dream star Angel McCoughtry, who narrowly finished second to Phoenix’s Diana Taurasi for the scoring title. “If you didn’t, then there’s a problem. So of course every year you say ‘this is our year, this is our year.’ Every team should think that way.”

Atlanta’s main competition in the East will likely come from Indiana and Connecticut. The Fever have won at least 21 games in six of the last seven seasons, and do-everything star forward Tamika Catchings is healthy again after being limited by a torn plantar fascia in her right foot during the conference finals against the Dream.
